The swingman Tom Abercrombie and the centre Alex Pledger are both struggling with injury nine days out from their first regular season game against the defending champion Perth Wildcats.

Abercrombie will undergo a hernia operation on Friday and the assistant coach Paul Henare says it's expected to take one to two weeks for him to recover.

Meanwhile Pledger met with a specialist on Wednesday as he continues to struggle with the toe injury that kept him out of New Zealand's World Cup campaign.

Henare says they're still not sure on the extent of the injury and expect more information later in the week.

He says the absence of the pair is likely to bring Reuben Te Rangi and the new import big man, Ekene Ibekwe, into the starting line-up at small forward and centre respectively.
