England happy to escape with draw after batting collapse in Centurion

Last man Graham Onions played out a tense final over as England escaped with a draw on the fifth and final day of the first Test against South Africa in Centurion.

The match seemed to be heading for a routine draw when England went to the tea break on 169 for 3, chasing 364 to win.

However in the final session South African new cap Friedel de Wet produced an inspired spell ripping through the English lineup to leave the tourists hanging on at 228 for 9.

Paul Collingwood and Onions survived the last 20 balls to save the test and the England captain Andrew Strauss admits avoiding defeat was the best possible result after the batting collapse.
