The former Indian cricket administrator Lalit Modi has issued legal proceedings against the former New Zealand international Chris Cairns to recoup almost a 5 million dollars in damages and costs.

England's Daily Telegraph newspaper is reporting that Modi has also applied to the High Court in London to have the libel verdict won by Cairns in 2012 to be set aside on the grounds of fraud.

Cairns was awarded 180 thousand dollars in damages after successfully suing Modi for libel for accusing him of involvement in corruption while playing in the now defunct Indian Cricket League in 2008.

In 2010 Modi, then chairman of the IPL, tweeted that he had prevented Cairns joining the auction for the Twenty20 league due to his links with corruption.

Cairns appeared in a London court last month after being charged by the London Metropolitan Police with perjury in relation to evidence given at the libel trial.

A trial date for that case is expected to be next October.
