However the game got a little more interesting when they had a player sent off shortly afterwards.

Roy Krishna converted a penalty for the Phoenix in the 85th minute.

The Phoenix were playing without Michael McGlinchey who returned home for the birth of a child.

Perth remain at the top of the A-League ladder while the Phoenix are 5th.

The Phoenix captain Andrew Durante says it wasn't their night, they tried hard but couldn't get the win.

He says they've got to start winning more games, we weren't good enough tonight.

Coach Ernie Merrick rued his side's poor start.... he says to concede a goal within two minutes was very tough, so they were chasing the game right from the very start.

He says he didn't think their passing was good in the front third.

The Phoenix are at home to Melbourne City next weekend.
