Wales have ended a six-year wait for a southern hemisphere rugby scalp when they beat South Africa 12-6 in Cardiff, while England also beat Australia at Twickenham.

Leigh Halfpenny kicked all the points for the Welsh at Millennium Stadium, while the Springboks' northern hemisphere tour was marred by a serious leg injury suffered by captain and centre Jean de Villiers.

De Villiers has a dislocated knee cap and his World Cup is now in doubt.

The victory was only Wales' second win in 28 games against the big three of the All Blacks, the Wallabies and the Springboks, and the first over South Africa since 1999 having lost their last 16 before Sunday's triumph.

In a dress rehearsal for a possible World Cup quarter-final meeting next year if both progress from the pool stage, Pat Lambie landed two penalties for the tired-looking South Africans, who go home after suffering tour defeats against Ireland and Wales, along with victories over England and Italy.

More than 82,000 fans and the players and officials united in a minute's applause at Twickenham in tribute to the late cricketer Phillip Hughes, before England ensured the Wallabies' worst end of year tour since 2005 with the 26-17 victory.

Both teams scored two tries.

The loss follows defeats to France and Ireland for the Australians.
