The Wellington Phoenix striker Jeremy Brockie will join South African club SuperSport United in January.

The 27-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract that includes a one-year option with the Pretoria based club after completing a medical.

Phoenix head coach Ernie Merrick says Brockie was leaving the club with his blessing.

Merrick says he was keen to keep him till the end of the year but the offer he received from SuperSport was too good to refuse.

Merrick says he's been a good servant to the Phoenix, and he wasn't going to stand in his way.

Speaking from Pretoria, Brockie says the deal he's been offered by SuperSport is too good to turn down at this stage of his career.

He says knowing that his contract was up at the end of the season he had a chat with Merrick before the season began.

Brockie says he feels it's time to find a new challenge and he's always wanted to play overseas.

He says the contract will take him up to the 2018 World Cup and he says hopefully he can continue to play well enough to keep his place in the All Whites.

Brockie will join the Phoenix team in Australia for Saturday's game against the Newcastle Jets.

It is thought that Brockie was a player on top of coach Gordon Igesund's target list when the former Bafana Bafana mentor took over at SuperSport after the All Whites striker impressed during the scoreless draw with South Africa earlier this year.

Brockie has struggled to make an impact in the A-League this season.

He's scored just five goals since Ernie Merrick came on as coach at the start of last season, has fallen further out of favour this season and is struggling for game time.
