For the first time a professional disc golf event will be held in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Disc Golf Tour has announced that next month's New Zealand Disc Golf Championships has been awarded B-Tier status by World Disc Golf governing body the PDGA.

B-Tier status means that the event will be the first Professional event in NZ to have a cash prize pool $5000 and prizes.

It also means that New Zealand will be round three of the Oceania Tour along with Chinese Taipei and Australia.

The announcement has already attracted some of the top professional disc golf players from around the world including world distance record holder Simon Lizotte of Germany and American Disc Golf Legend David Feldberg.

There are competitors from at least six countries descending on Auckland for the three-day event over Waitangi weekend.

The 11-time New Zealand disc golf champion Simon Feasey - who is also overseeing the event as tournament director - has designed a course at Auckland's Waitawa Regional Park.
