The German club dominated the first half, as they struck the post and had a goalbound shot cleared off the line.

However, a red card to the side's talismanic midfielder Xabi Alonso stifled their attacking intent, and the game, played in the western Ukranian city of Lviv, more than a thousand kilometres away from their home in Donetsk due to the military conflict in Eastern Ukraine, eventually petered out.

Meanwhile, English Premier League leaders Chelsea took a first-half lead over French side Paris Saint-Germain when defender Branislav Ivanovic headed home a neat Gary Cahill flick.

But PSG levelled through an Edinson Cavani header in the 54th minute.

The return legs, with all to play for, will take place in just under a month.
