The world indoor shot put champion American Ryan Whiting broke Cantabrian Tom Walsh's New Zealand record at the Big Shot meeting in Christchurch on Wednesday evening.
Whiting threw over Walsh's 20.79-metre mark twice to win the competition, with the American's official winning distance 21.03 metres.

Walsh finished second with a best throw of 19.99 metres.
The New Zealand champion concedes his performance didn't match his own expectations but he hopes to produce a bigger throw when he backs up at the Auckland Track Challenge on Thursday night.
Walsh says a first-up competition is the same in many sports and he's sure he'll be better for it.
He says the last time he backed up he won, and so hopefully he can do that in Auckland.
Whiting has won the last two world indoor championships, including last year's meet in Poland where Walsh made his international breakthrough by claiming a surprise bronze medal.
The 27-year-old American also took a shot at Walsh's New Zealand rival Jacko Gill for snubbing the Christchurch event.
Whiting believes that if 20-year-old Gill wants to make a mark on the world stage, he must start competing in more events against top competition.
