The country's best swimmer Lauren Boyle is reaping the benefits of skipping the dysfunctional Swimming New Zealand setup to train in Australia.
Boyle clocked the fastest 1500 metres freestyle time of the year so far at the Australian national championships on the weekend.
The 27-year old said she had embraced the training system of New Zealand's trans-Tasman rivals.
Boyle has been training with the Australian national coach Denis Cotterell, after she couldn't find a mentor within the New Zealand system to suit her needs.
"It's been quite tumultuous for the last few months with all the changes to Swimming New Zealand," she said.
"I went to the Gold Coast in November to try and get some stability in my coaching and have been swimming with Denis Cotterell, who's been coaching at the Miami club for years and he's an excellent middle and long distance coach so I have been really lucky to work with him."
Boyle said she was not sure whether Cotterell would be able to take her all the way to the World Championships in Russia from late July.
