Derbyshire have signed Rutherford as cover for Tillakaratne Dilshan from mid-June until the end of July.

Rutherford will play in all three forms of the game while Dilshan plays in the Caribbean Premier League.

Rutherford, who is part of the Black Caps Test side touring England, has played 16 Tests, scoring 755 runs.

Derbyshire's elite performance director Graeme Welch says Rutherford is a talented top-order batsman.

"He has international pedigree in both the long and shorter formats which will be key as he joins us at what is a busy part of the summer."

Rutherford also had a spell playing for Essex during the 2013 season.

Fellow opener Martin Guptill also plays for Derbyshire.

Rutherford told the club website he's looking forward to remaining in England and contributing to a successful Derbyshire side.

The 26-year-old says they are an ambitious club and coming off the back of a Test series, he intends to play his part in a successful season.
