Slow start for Ko in Virginia

New Zealand's world golf number one Lydia Ko is well down the field despite an even par opening round at the latest LPGA tour event in Virginia.

On a low scoring first day, Ko's was tied for 40th, six shots behind the leader Joanna Klatten from France.

The world number two Inbee Park's chances of supplanting Ko at the top of the rankings suffered a setback with the Korean carding a one over par first round 72 to tie for 53rd.

Ko will reportedly take a break from the tour before the start of the second major tournament of the year on June the 11th, which could play into Park's hands.

The New Zealander finished 41st at the last tournament she played in Texas, which was won by Park, after Ko was victorious the week before in San Francisco.
