The Hurricanes first five Beauden Barrett will miss their last regular season Super Rugby game against the Chiefs in New Plymouth on Saturday.
Barrett misses the chance to run onto his home pitch after suffering a calf strain.
Barrett returned to action in last weekend's win over the Highlanders after spending a month on the sidelines with a knee injury.
James Marshall will start in the No.10 jersey.
Coach Chris Boyd says he would have started, but pulled up a bit sore on Thursday and while he could have played, they didn't want to risk him.
Boyd has shuffled his team slightly for the match that has little bearing for the Hurricanes with lock James Broadhurst and flanker Ardie Savea dropping to the bench replaced by Mark Abbott and Taranaki-born Callum Gibbins.
Broadhurst has started 13 and Savea 12 matches, out of a possible 15 this season.
Brad Shields also starts at 6 after being on the bench last weekend.
Meanwhile captain Conrad Smith will join Ma'a Nonu as the most capped Hurricane when he leads his team out on Saturday night.
It will be Smith's 124th appearance for the 'Canes, a number Nonu brought up against the Highlanders in Napier last weekend.
Smith achieved a milestone earlier this year when he and Nonu became the most capped midfield pairing for the 'Canes, while last week he also became the most successful Hurricanes' captain, winning 33 matches in charge.
The record was previously held by Rodney So'oialo, who led the team to 32 victories during his time as captain.
The team to face the Chiefs at Yarrow Stadium this Saturday, kick-off 7.35pm, is;
1. Reggie Goodes
2. Dane Coles
3. Ben Franks
4. Jeremy Thrush
5. Mark Abbott
6. Brad Shields
7. Callum Gibbins
8. Victor Vito
9. TJ Perenara
10. James Marshall
11. Julian Savea
12. Rey Lee-Lo
13. Conrad Smith
