The coach of the New Zealand women's rugby team Greg Smith has voluntarily stood down for the side's upcoming tour of Canada after abusing match officials.

Last week, Smith was banned from coaching for 14 weeks by the Waikato Rugby union after he verbally abused match officials while coaching the club team Fraser-Tech.

New Zealand Rugby says Smith agreed that stepping down is in the best interests of the Black Ferns who will appoint an interim coach for the tour.

The Black Ferns play Canada, America and England between the 27th of June and the 5th of July.
