Double world champion Val Smith, with partner Kay Hammond, has failed to qualify for post-section play in the womens pairs at the national bowls championships in Wellington.

But the expected combinations have all secured a place.

Local hopes Leigh Griffin and Kirsten Griffin from Victoria have been comfortable qualifiers while hot favourites Jan and Marina Khan will also be present.

In the men's singles Northern's Phil Skoglund was ousted after he failed to secure three wins while former New Zealand representative Sean O'Neill also won't be going any further.

Australian-based Black Jacks Richard Girvan and Ali Forsyth both made the cut despite both losing to Victoria's Richard Corry.

Ryan Bester has also eased through, as did Andrew Kelly, Dwayne Cameron, Shannon McIlroy, Danny Delany, Peter Belliss and defending champion Richard Collett.
