Spieth sank an eight-foot birdie putt on his final hole, the par-three ninth, for a three under par 67 to climb back to level pegging with another American, Dustin Johnson, and fellow first-round leader, Henrik Stenson, on five under par overall.

Spieth charged into the outright lead from three strokes back with four birdies on his front nine, before running up a double at the 18th where he hit his drive and third shot into bunkers, then covered his homeward nine in one-under 35.

Three-time champion Tiger Woods missed the cut, along with Rotorua's Danny Lee - the lone New Zealander competing.

Lee carded a second round four over 74 and he's 12 over, nine shots outside the projected cut. Woods is even worse - he's second last at 16 over after a 76 and a midway total of 16-over 156, his highest 36 hole total on the PGA Tour as a professional.

The Australian Jason Day collapsed playing his last hole, after suffering another bout of vertigo.

Day was walking down the ninth, his final hole of the day, when he collapsed heavily to the ground. He was on the verge of retiring but pulled himself up to close out his round.

It is not yet known if he will be able to continue in the third round.

The Queenslander carded an even-par 70 to finish at two under for the tournament, currently three shots off the lead in a tie for 11th.
