The All Blacks centre Conrad Smith is hoping he's picked to start this weekend's Rugby Championship test against South Africa in what will be his last game at his favourite ground.

The New Zealand squad have touched down in Johannesburg earlier than usual, arriving even before the Springboks, as they look to remain unbeaten following their opening match win over Argentina.

Smith, who will quit New Zealand rugby at the conclusion of this year's World Cup, says Ellis Park is one the sport's most intimidating places to play, with high stands that loom over the ground bringing the large crowd within spitting distance of the field.

Smith says he'd love to start his last ever game at the famous South African stadium.

Sonny Bill Williams started at second-five against Argentina pushing Ma'a Nonu to centre and Smith out of the matchday 23.

However, Smith will likely start against the Springboks with Williams and Dan Carter left behind in New Zealand to freshen up.

Either Nonu, Malakai Fekitoa or Ryan Crotty could partner Smith in the midfield.
