The European champions have been desperately looking for first-five cover with Quade Cooper having pulled out of his deal to join the club, while Matt Giteau and Frédéric Michalak both in contention to make the World Cup.

That would leave Toulon with very few options for the first seven rounds of the Top 14.

Tom Taylor was linked to the club earlier this week, but La Proence is reporting that Donald, who has spent the last two seasons playing for Japanese second-flight team Mitsubishi Dynaboars, is on his way.

Donald was famously called up by the All Blacks during the last World Cup, kicking a crucial penalty after coming off the bench in the final.

He is taking a tour party to this year's World Cup in England in September and October.
