South Africa coach Norma Plummer believes the Silver Ferns have a long way to go if they're to win next month's Netball World Cup in Australia.

The Silver Ferns improved defensively in their 67-28 win over South Africa after the visitors gave the New Zealanders a closer match than expected in their first encounter on Sunday night in Hamilton.

It was a different story at Trusts Arena in Auckland though, Casey Kopua and Leana de Bruin shut down South Africa's shooters Lenize Potgieter and Maryka Holtzhausen to keep the visitors to only 15 goals from 23 attempts in the first half.

However, South African and former Australian coach Norma Plummer said she's not convinced shooting at 80 percent like the Silver Ferns did last night will be enough against Australia.

"We didn't add the pressure that Australia's going to add, it's not going to be such a walk in the park so yea I think they've still got a fair bit of work to do."

"I'll be honest, I couldn't help but tip Australia, I just think the depth in the whole team and where it's at, it's pretty strong." Plummer said.

However, the former Australian coach did suggest the Silver Ferns may have a secret weapon up their sleeves.

"What about Paseka? She's an Aussie of course, but you know what a fantastic talent, Wai needed to put them all out the same as we did to give them the opportunities."

Plummer also suggested it's time the ANZ Championship expanded outside of Australia and New Zealand.

"I think it's time that we had a Rugby Union situation where you've got what Super 14 or something? We wouldn't get 14 teams but we've got to expand the game, that's the way to go I think and it's going to help bring up the other countries."
