New Zealand Rugby's general manager of rugby Neil Sorensen has put to bed any rumours of Shaun Johnson playing sevens for New Zealand at next year's Rio Olympics.

Johnson has been touted by media as a possible code swapper for next season.

The 24-year-old Warriors and Kiwis playmaker's season was ended on Saturday night after suffering a broken leg during the Warriors' 32-12 loss to the Manly Sea Eageles.

But speaking at Thursday's ITM Cup launch in Auckland, Sorensen says Johnson isn't on NZR's radar.

"No, no, he's such a wonderful player that we understand why there's speculation and the rumour mills but no, we haven't approached Shaun and we just wish him a speedy recovery."

Sorensen said an announcement will be made in the coming weeks about which Super Rugby players Sir Gordon Tietjens wants to contract for next year's Rio Olympics.
