Fielding only one player from the squad of 23 that lost to Australia in the Rugby Championship at Mendoza, the Pumas embraced the 'friendly' nature of the match against their weaker South American neighbours.

The home side scored one try and kicked four penalties for a 17-12 half time lead even though Argentina scored two tries in the opening spell.

The Pumas scored a converted try in the 42nd minute to briefly take the lead before Uruguay struck back with seven points of their own a minute later.

The lead continued to see-saw when Argentina scored another converted try in the 57th minute before Uruguay kicked two more penalties for the win.

Uruguay have qualified for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, but have been drawn in the so called "pool of death" with Australia, England, Wales and Fiji.

The Pumas are likely to return to full strength for next Sunday's match of the Rugby Championship against South Africa in Durban.
