Shanahan set to join Washington Redskins

The two-time NFL Super Bowl winning coach Mike Shanahan is to take charge of the Washington Redskins.

The league's own website cited team sources stating that the former Denver Broncos head coach would be unveiled this week.

The Redskins, who finished bottom of the NFC East with a 4-12 record, fired head coach Jim Zorn after the final game of the regular season.

Shanahan, who won Super Bowls with the Broncos in 1998 and 1999, spent more than a decade with Denver before being fired in 2008 after the team missed out on the playoffs.

The widely respected coach had a brief spell with the L.A Raiders in the late 1980s and was also offensive co-ordinator with the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Broncos.
