The former All Black first five Carlos Spencer has been told he can leave English rugby club Gloucester.
The 34-year-old joined from Northampton last season but injury and the emergence of youngster Freddie Burns have limited his opportunities.
Spencer's contract runs out at the end of the season and reports in South Africa suggest he is set to join Super 14 side the Lions as player-coach.
