The record-breaking US baseball big hitter Mark McGwire has admitted he used steroids.

The former St Louis Cardinals slugger says he used steroids during his Major League Baseball career, including 1998 when he broke the single-season home-run record.

McGwire wants to set the record straight before beginning his new role as hitting coach with St Louis, saying he remembers trying steroids very briefly in the 1989-90 offseason and then after he was injured in 1993.

He also used them on occasion throughout the 1990s including during the 1998 season, but wishes he had never touched the drugs, calling it "foolish" and "a mistake".

The 46-year-old, whose 70 home runs in 1998 shattered the record of 61 belted by Roger Maris for the New York Yankees in 1961, last played in 2001 and was hired in October for the Cardinals.
