Two-time Olympic swimmer Cameron Gibson has announced his retirement from the sport after representing New Zealand for a decade.

The 27-year-old won a bronze medal in the 200m backstroke at his second Commonwealth Games at Melbourne in 2006, and also qualified for the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Gibson was a key member in the mens relays, and lead the medley relay team of Daniel Bell, Glenn Snyders and Corney Swanepoel to New Zealand's first Olympic relay final in Beijing, where they finished fifth.

Gibson decided to retire after considering a further campaign through to the Commonwealth Games this year.
