The Waikato back Sosene Anesi will get first crack at the New South Wales Waratahs fullback spot in their opening Super 14 trial match against Queensland in Lismore on Saturday.

Anesi, who can play either fullback or winger, has made one Test appearance for New Zealand, moving across to Sydney from the Chiefs.

The Waratahs other major off-shore recruit, South African-born emerging Springbok lock Hendrik Roodt has been named in the second row.

The wing spots have taken by former Brumbies speedster Peter Betham and Nemani Nadolo, Lote Tuquiri's cousin, who will make his first NSW appearance after a foot stress fracture sidelined him for the Waratahs 2009 campaign.

Five-eighth Daniel Halangahu has been confirmed as captain.

His partner in the halves is Josh Holmes, who has returned to the Waratahs after a spell with the Brumbies.
