New Zealand's Greg Henderson remains second going into the fourth stage of cycling's Tour Down Under in South Australia.

Henderson's still 14 seconds behind the leader and 2008 winner, Andre Greipel of Germany.

Portugal's Manuel Cardoso won the third stage from Spain's Alejandro Valverde with Australia's road race world champion Cadel Evans third.

Greipel, who won the first two stages, finished with the front group to hold on to the leader's jersey with three days to go.

Lance Armstrong needed a new rear wheel after puncturing a tyre and recovered to finish in the main peloton in 30th, one place ahead of Henderson but said he was too tired to even join in the sprint finish.

Julain Dean was the best placed New Zealander in 19th with Hayden Roulston nearly a minute back.
