Fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan has been called into the squad, after Neesham suffered back pain during the first Test at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Coach Mike Hesson said Neesham had worked hard to get back to fitness following his injury earlier this year, but at this stage still experiences discomfort when bowling extended loads.

Neesham will bat today at the Gabba.

"Jimmy will return to New Zealand for further medical assessment and we'll continue to monitor his situation," said Hesson.

"At this stage our number one priority is getting Jimmy fully healthy and ready for the home summer."

McClenaghan, who is yet to feature for the Black Caps' Test side, will join the squad in Perth ahead of the second Test.

"Mitch has the ability to run in all day, bowl quick spells and has experience on the International stage," said Hesson.

"He'll bring a lot to the group and is obviously very excited to come and join the squad."

The New Zealand camp are waiting on a fitness update of bowler Tim Southee, who also has a back complaint.

Neil Wagner flew to Brisbane over the weekend as cover for Southee.
