New Zealand's world champion cyclist Alison Shanks has won gold in the individual pursuit on the opening day of the World Cup in Beijing.

Shanks cruised through the final winning the title with a slick time of 3:33.360 which was more than seven seconds quicker than silver medalist Vilija Sereikaite of Lithuania.

The world champion started conservatively but produced a lightning second kilometre and was able to take the foot off the pedal in an impressive effort.

The best of the other New Zealand riders were talented young rider Tom Scully, who claimed the bronze medal in the men's points race, and the New Zealand men's sprint team who took fifth place in their final.
