Set a target of 481, South Africa, whose highest innings total in the series has been 185, adopted stonewalling tactics to go to stumps on 72 for 2.

Skipper Hashim Amla led by example, taking 46 balls to score his first run, and his unbeaten 23 came from 207 balls, the slowest innings of 200 balls or more in test cricket.

His partner AB de Villiers, who has scored the fastest 50, 100 and 150 in one-day international cricket, is the other not out batsmen on 11, scored off 91 balls.
