The Phoenix have now gone seven games without a win and it's their fifth straight away loss.

They're eighth on the ladder, seven points outside the top six.

Melbourne City impressed on attack, a brace to Harry Novillo and another from Bruno Fornaroli - his 13th of the season - had City 3-0 up and cruising inside 50 minutes.

Roly Bonevacia scored a contender for goal of the season midway through the second half to close the gap but it was their only consolation.

The Phoenix appear to have little chance against the top sides and will struggle to make the playoffs unless they can turn their form around.

Melbourne City are now up to second on the A-League table.
