Santner experienced pain in his right foot at the conclusion of the second one-dayer in Wellington on Saturday.

A subsequent scan showed bruising around the bone in his right foot which means he'll miss the match at the Basin Reserve beginning on Friday.

Coach Mike Hesson said it was disappointing for Santner.

"It's unfortunate for Mitch as he's been a key player for us so far this summer," said Hesson.

"The positive news is that we picked it up early and hopefully Mitch can make a quick recovery."

Santner will continue to be monitored and a decision on his availability for the second Test will be made at a later date.
