Sir Vivian Richards posted a tribute on social media site Twitter, praising McCullum for his swashbuckling innings that broke his mark for the quickest Test ton.

McCullum's century on the opening day at Hagley Oval came off just 54 balls - two fewer than the previous record of 56 deliveries, originally set by Richards against England in 1986.

Sir Vivian posted this tribute on Twitter:

In it, he said how he had been a McCullum fan for a long time, and he was glad it was the Otago veteran who had broken his record.

"Let me take this opportunity to congratulate Brendon, (I've) been a great fan of yours for many years," Sir Vivian said in the video.

"Well done on your achievement. And if there was going to be an individual who you would've liked to have surpassed whatever you would've achieved in life, certainly it would be you."

"You're one of those individuals who help to put bums on seats. Long may that continue. Well done, man."
