With a total of just 5.69 kilometres among the three stages run, Paddon said his performance was "not so bad."

"The atmosphere tonight has been amazing - it has been about the fans today and not the driving," he said.

"Super Special stages (are) an area for me to work on, but tonight was not so bad. Now we are ready for the real challenge of Rally México tomorrow morning."

"Tomorrow's stages look great but we've never them done before, so we've got a lot to learn."

The exciting Guanajuato ceremonial start draws huge crowds to the UNESCO World Heritage Site as drivers tackle the city's former mining tunnels for the rally's first stage.

They then completed a double run at Leon's motor racing circuit, a stage which is well-liked by the drivers, mixing asphalt and gravel and featuring a big jump and a water splash.
