The Chiefs scored the opening try in the 19th minute through Tom Sanders, before Warwick Tecklenburg struck back for the Lions 12 minutes later.

At half-time the visitors had opened a handy 19-11 lead thanks to the goal kicking of Elton Jantjies who slotted four penalties.

Courtnall Skosan scored the first try of the second half to extend the Lions' advanatge, but the Chiefs hit the front in the 54th minute following two five pointers to Damian McKenzie and James Lowe.

Tries to Lions Warren Whiteley and Ruan Combrinck soon restored the visitors' lead, which was closed to just three points following a try to the Chiefs' reserve half-back Brad Webber.

The home side threw everything at the line in the final 10 minutes, but the Lions held on for their first victory in Hamilton.

Last week the Lions were too good for the new Japanese Super Rugby franchise the Sunwolves, beating them 26-13 in Tokyo.
