Chasing back to back major titles New Zealand's world golf number Lydia Ko has made a solid start to the first LPGA major of the year the ANA Inspiration in California.

The 18 year old Ko is in a ten way tie for 14th at two under par, three shots off the lead which is jointly held by

Spin's Azahara Munoz and Japan's Ai Miyazato.

Ko has previously struggled at the tournament which tends to favour the longer hitters off the tee.

She had four birdies and two bogeys in her round.

"My putting wasn't very good. I gave myself a few good looks for birdies (but) when you are leaving your putts short it's obviously not going to drop..but it's a solid start to the first major of the year," she said.

Ko won the Evian Championship in France last year, which was the final major of 2015 and Ko's first.
