Brumbies too good for injury-ravaged Force

Stirling Mortlock became the first player to score 1,000 points in Super rugby as the ACT Brumbies began their 2010 campaign with a 24-15 victory over compatriots the Western Force.

Captain Mortlock, who went into the match on 996 points, converted all three tries and slotted a penalty to reach the milestone in the competition, which expanded from 12 teams in 2006.

Brumbies replacement hooker Huia Edmonds brushed off Australian international fullback James O'Connor's attempted tackle to score a try in the corner with eight minutes left to make the game safe for the 2001 and 2004 winners.

Josh Valentine opened the scoring in the 11th minute for the Brumbies, finishing a nice move started by Mortlock who set Ben Alexander through to dash 30 metres.

Valentine was then involved in the second try, linking with Adam Ashley-Cooper to put Stephen Moore in.

First five eight Mark Bartholomeusz was missing through injury for the Force, so O'Connor took over the kicking duties slotting five penalties as the home side fought back to 15-17 but he pushed wide an attempt to take the lead with 10 minutes remaining.

The Brumbies then went up the other end and Edmonds scored, converted by Mortlock, to seal the win and the four points.
