The club is expected to make a formal announcement later today that Mourinho will replace Dutchman Louis van Gaal, whose two-year reign at Old Trafford ended on Monday, two days after United lifted the FA Cup.

The self-styled "Special One, Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea in December, ending his second spell in charge of the London club.

He won three league titles in his two spells at Stamford Bridge, as well as guiding Porto and Inter Milan to Champions League victories in 2004 and 2010 respectively.

He was previously linked with the Old Trafford post when Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, but the club appointed David Moyes instead.

Mourinho was also his predecessor's assistant at Barcelona during the 1990s.

Talks between Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes and senior United officials began on Tuesday but were delayed by negotiations over Mourinho's image rights.

The BBC reports the negotiations have concluded with an agreement, while other UK media say the contract has been signed.
