Rio hopes dashed but Walker's BMX career not over

Her dream of competing at the Rio Olympics has been dashed but London Olympic silver medallist Sarah Walker says her BMX career is far from over.

Walker was unable to reach the final at the world champs in Colombia this morning meaning she failed to gain one of the two last remaining qualifying spots for the Rio Olympics.

Walker's had a wretched injury run over the past year and a half and again injured herself at training on Saturday meaning she could only manage fifth in each of her three heats.

"There's definitely been multiple times I've had a few tears and it's pretty heartbreaking. I really wanted to go to (Rio) and I gave it everything and I am proud of myself for that," she said.

Despite missing out on Rio the 27 year old Walker says he has no intention of retiring.

"I do BMX for more than just the Olympics. I do it because I love it and I do it because it's fun," said Walker.

"This is definitely a bump in the road ..but man it's definitely been a crazy journey and to get so close is kind of devastating but at the same time I know that I gave it 100 percent."

Over the past couple of years she has suffered 11 fractures to her arms in four separate crashes, one of which, at an event in the United States in 2014, also left her with a badly injured knee and concussion.

"There'll be a few more tears yet....(but) I know that in this build up (to the world champs) I've never been as good as what I have been now..so it would be silly to quit now."
