Ireland became the first Irish men's rugby side ever to beat New Zealand in any age group to take pole position in Pool A of the World Rugby Under 20 Championships.

New Zealand controlled of the early stages through their clinical backline play to lead 14-6 with Jordie Barrett and Shaun Stevenson crossing for tries.
As the weather deteriorated in Manchester, Ireland made their way back into the contest through their exceptional ball control and smart tactical play and sharp goal kicking of first five Bill Johnston.
Early in the second half, New Zealand's early lead had turned into a 23-14 deficit and Scott Robertson's side were forced to play catch up in the wet.
Electric wing Malo Tuitama did his best to drag New Zealand into the game with a second half double before Ireland number eight Max Deegan crashed over in the dying stages to put the match out of reach for New Zealand.
The win was the first by an Ireland side of any level over New Zealand since the Ireland Women's team beat the Black Ferns in 2014. It leaves New Zealand needing to beat Wales in their final pool match to progress to the knock out stages.
