Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson both scored centuries as the New Zealand cricketers declared on 582 for 4 on day two of the second test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Taylor passed the late Martin Crowe to third on New Zealand's all-time test run scorers and Williamson became the first New Zealander and youngest ever to record centuries against all nine Test nations.

Williamson scored 113 and Taylor was unbeaten on 136.

Taylor said it was a special moment to pass one of his former mentor's milestones.

"It was nice to beat Hogan (Crowe), he was my mentor for many years and when I first met him he said in a mentor capacity that he wanted me to at least beat his record so it was nice to knock off one of the goals he set for me."

Zimbabwe were 55 without loss at stumps on the second day, trailing by 527 runs.

Meanwhile the Black Caps captain Kane Williamson has brushed off comparisons with cricket's batting greats despite breaking another record.

Williamson's 113 was his 14th test century and he's now the first New Zealander to score a ton against all nine test playing nations.

Williamson joins just 12 other players to have achieved the feat, including Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar.

He said comparisons to those two are premature.

"You join those ranks, yes it's nice to have scored some runs and to have contributed to some good team performances but those two (Lara and Tendulkar) are the big boys eh haha."

Fellow batsman Ross Taylor scored his 15th test ton, he's now just two behind the late Martin Crowe at the top of the New Zealand list.
