The defending Olympic champion, Mahe Drysdale, easily won his semifinal and led from the starting hooter.
However, his time was three seconds slower than the winner of the other semi, his old rival Ondrej Synek of the Czech Republic.
The women's single sculler, Emma Twigg, is also though after a hard fought semi.

She hovered between second and third, but pushed hard over the final quarter to finish less than half a second behind the Australian in first.
Twigg claimed the fourth fastest time overall.
"I went out there to push myself (for) a spot in the final," she said.
And defending Olympic champion shot putter Valerie Adams has qualified for the final in Rio.
In wet conditions and on her first attempt Adams threw 19.74m, over a metre more than was needed to see her through to the finals.
Coming first in the qualifier, Adams is vying for her third Olympic gold medal with the final at 1pm today.
