Skelton topped the jockeys' premiership nine times and rode more than 2000 winners in a career spanning more than 30 years.

Among his winning rides was Van Der Hum in the 1976 Melbourne Cup.

He also rode Great Sensation to three consecutive Wellington Cup wins in the early '60s.

His brothers Frank and Errol were jockeys too, as well as his older brother Bill who was also a champion.
