Three quick wickets before stumps have the Black Caps on the back foot after two days of the second Test against South Africa at Centurion.
The tourists are 38 for three in their first innings, 443 runs behind the Proteas.
After declaring on 481 for eight late on day two, the South Africans sent New Zealand into bat before the end of the day and picked up the wickets of openers Martin Guptill and Tom Lathan cheaply, while Ross Taylor was run out on one.
Guptill lasted exactly three and a half overs for his eight runs, before nicking one behind off Vernon Philander.
Latham lasted one over longer before he was ruled on review to be caught for four by Quentin de Kock off Dale Steyn.
Taylor ran himself out going for a run that wasn't there.
Captain Kane Williamson will resume day three at the crease on 15 with Henry Nicholls on four.
The Proteas were irresistible with the bat in their first innings after losing the toss.
Faf du Plessis top-scored with 112 not out, while only three batsmen didn't make it well into double figures, and there were five half-centuries.
Neil Wagner's five wickets for 86 runs was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers.
