Silver Ferns captain Katrina Grant says an improved performance will be needed to beat Australia in the final of the Netball Quad Series in Melbourne tonight.

The Ferns won their first two matches against England and South Africa comfortably but showed signs of rust as the new look team tries to gel.

Grant said a performance like their win over South Africa won't be good enough against the reigning world champions.

"I think we're getting those links and combinations (right) and just the little unnecessary errors out of our game but this match against Australia is going to be a true test for us and I can't wait."

Despite the much needed improvement, Grant said her side is capable of beating the Diamonds.

"I think going in there with confidence and knowing that they are a good side but that we're better is the key to success. We've been training really hard and the more we work together, the more seamless we become and those links are there for all of us."
