Rugby league bad boy Greg Bird has been fined after a drunken incident in northern New South Wales last month.

The former Gold Coast Titans player was fined $550 for refusing to leave a Byron Bay hotel on September 17.

Police said Bird and a group of friends were asked to leave the premises when they became too intoxicated, claiming a fight broke out with security staff.

"It's alleged a 32-year-old man was asked to leave a licensed premises by security staff but failed to comply," NSW police said in a statement.

"The man was assisted out of the location by a friend with no further incident."

Bird played 129 games for the Gold Coast, 18 State of Origin games for NSW and 17 Tests for Australia.

He was released from his Titan's contract last week to join French side Catalan Dragons on a five year deal - his second stint with the Dragons.

In 2009, Bird's NRL contract with the Cronulla Sharks was ripped up when he was charged with glassing his girlfriend at the time, Katie Milligan.

He was later acquitted of the charges.
