Durante wants to mark milestone with a win

12:36 pm on 5 November 2016

The Wellington Phoenix captain Andrew Durante will chalk up his 250th A-League game today but the milestone is not at the forefront of his mind.

The Phoenix are rooted to the bottom of the competition ladder having lost all four of their games so far this season and Durante is more concerned about gaining their first win of the season against Newcastle in Wellington on Saturday.

"We've got to really go at them...really put them under pressure, pick up lots of second balls, just really get their back line under a lot of pressrue with deliveries into the box, shots on goal."

Durante said his side needs to show Newcastle "they are up for it and hurting...we really need to show everyone that (while) we're in a difficult position we're going to work hard to get out of it.

Durante, 34, who has also played for the Newcastle Jets in the A-League competition sits only behind Sydney FC goal keeper Danny Vukovic in most appearances.

Vukovic has played 254 games.

Durante said he's been fortunate injury wise "outside of the two broken legs I've suffered."

"I understand my body really well and know when to push it and when not to push it," he said.

Durante believes consistency is one of his strengths.

"That's what I strive to do - to be as consistent as possible and it seems to have held me in good stead."

Saturday's match kicks off at 7.35pm.
