The 41-year-old will be unveiled as the team's wildcard selection for the February tournament.

A crowd favourite over his 12 seasons at the Reds, the 2006 John Eales Medal winner hasn't played since his career ended in Japan in 2012.

But Latham believes his backs coaching job with the Top League's NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes will leave him in good stead.

"There are some steppy, fast wingers at my Japanese club so I'll get them to do some one-on-ones with me because I don't want to let anyone down at the Reds," Latham, who played 78 Tests for Australia, said.

Retired code-hopping star Lote Tuqiri is also expected to join NSW for the inaugural edition of the pre-Super Rugby tournament.

The duo will come against some of rugby biggest names when 14 clubs from around the world descend on Suncorp Stadium for the two-day, 10-a-side carnival.

Ten Australian and New Zealand Super Rugby franchises will be involved, as well as South Africa's Blue Bulls, Japan's Panasonic Wild Knights, the Samoan national team and French glamour club Toulon.
