The Otago Volts have beaten the Knights by eight wickets in their domestic T20 cricket match at Mount Maunganui.

The recently recalled Black Cap and Volts batsman, Neil Broom, top scored with an unbeaten 54 from 41 balls.

The Knights won the toss and batted first on Bay Oval where Tim Seifert was their top scorer with 41 from 31 balls.

His team mate the Black Caps' all-rounder Corey Anderson, playing only as a batsman, hit 39 off 30.

The Volts Black Cap Neil Wagner bowled with his usual aggression and was rewarded three for 22.

In reply, the Volts opener Hamish Rutherford led the charge blasting 39 off 24 before Broom and Michael Bracewell (41 off 27) ushered in the win.

In Nelson, the Central Stags defeated the Wellington Firebirds by nine runs at Saxton Oval.

Sent into bat, the Stags scored an impressive 181 for 5 thanks largely to Tom Bruce's 74 from 41 balls that featured 11 boundaries including three sixes.

The evergreen Grant Elliot took two wickets for the Firebirds and hit 15 runs in an admirable run chase that finished with Wellington on 172 for 6.

The Firebirds captain and opener Hamish Marshall top scored for the capital region with 52 off 37.

With three wins from four games the Stags have gone to the top of the table, although the second placed Auckland Aces have only played three games and won all of them.

The Volts are third followed by the Canterbury Kings, the Knights and the Firebirds.
