A decision on just who will replace Ernie Merrick as permanent coach of the Wellington Phoenix won't now be made until after Christmas the club's general manager David Dome has confirmed.

When Merrick resigned earlier this month club chairman Rob Morrison expected to have a permanent replacment appointed before Christmas but that hasn't eventuated.

With the side performing well under interim coach Chris Greenacre, with a win and a draw since Merrick's departure, the Phoenix now sit on the cusp of the top six.

Chris Greenacre's smile is likely to get even wider should he be appointed permanent head coach of the Phoenix.

Another strong performance against Newcastle United on Boxing Day would seal Greenacre the job on a permanent basis.

The fact the club management also approved Greenacre's hiring of former All Whites Shane Smeltz also indicates he's likely to be confirmed in the role next week.
